Sojourner House offers comprehensive services for people who are abused. Our services are free and confidential. We provide emergency shelter, 24-hour helpline assistance, and comprehensive court and community based services for people who are abused (domestic violence). We provide prevention and education programs as well. Sojourner House embraces respect, compassion, fairness, and equality in carrying out our mission to end domestic violence. It is our conviction that every woman, man, and child has the right to live in an environment free from physical, sexual and emotional abuse. In the belief that individual empowerment and social change go hand-in-hand, we work toward both. We value the strengths inherent in diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and ideas. Sojourner House has been in existence since 1976. The agency was founded by a group of students from Brown University who were committed to providing advocacy and shelter for women experiencing domestic violence. In the years since, Sojourner House has grown to include not only shelter services and advocacy, but also specialized advocacy for Latinas, Lesbians, Elderly, and women living in rural Rhode Island. We have youth programs, Teen Dating Violence, and Child Advocacy programs and our newest program WomenCARES, which assists women who are experiencing Domestic Violence in assessing their HIV risks. Support Sojourner House and all that they do by becoming a volunteer with them. Be sure to let everyone know that the Volunteer Center of RI is helping you to find out about these great volunteer opportunities at www.vcri.org!
