The Mattatuck Museum is one of the oldest museums in Connecticut and one of the first to be accredited by the American Association of Museum. In May of 2008 the museum opened a new 6000 square foot exhibit of the region called “Coming Home: Building Community in a Changing World.” The exhibit offers extensive visitor access to 1,500 oral histories and 25,000 images related to regional experience and features the experiences of workers, women, and immigrants, along with the stories of inventors and entrepreneurs who worked in the industries of the Naugatuck Valley making brass objects, clocks, and buttons over a period of 125 years. It is the most comprehensive presentation of industrial, urban, and immigration history in Connecticut.
