Danbury Animal Welfare Society, Inc. (DAWS) is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our community and beyond. Founded in 1974, DAWS provides shelter and care to animals in need, offers adoption counseling to place our loving animals in forever homes, promotes responsible pet guardianship and human treatment of animals, and works toward ending animal overpopulation through education, spay/neuter and trap, neuter and return programs.

Description:
Everyday, we care for over 100 dogs and cats and each year we place hundreds of dogs and cats in loving homes. We also provide educational aid for people who have behavior questions regarding their pets and offer low cost spay/neuter opportunities to the Greater Danbury Community. We feed and oversee feral (wild) cat colonies throughout Danbury. We are also one of the few agencies in the Danbury area to trap, neuter and release feral cats thus controlling their population and sparing thousands of cats from lives of suffering and neglect.

History:
Danbury Animal Welfare Society was founded in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens. At first all the adoptions were done out of their homes. During the 1980's, we were able to purchase our current building at 147 Grassy Plain Street through the help of a generous trust. Several years ago we added a clinic to our building enabling us to provide a significant amount of veterinary care to our animals on-site. We receive our funding mostly through generous community contributions, fund raising events, bequests, and grants.
