History:
American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in response to the needs of injured soldiers fighting the Civil War. She began a massive letter writing campaign to get people from around the country to send aid to the soldiers. Her campaign for help proved successful and in 1865 she was commissioned by President Lincoln to be the first female head of an official federal agency. Out of these roots grew the American Red Cross to become the largest humanitarian aid agency throughout the world.
