Shelter of the Cross provides transitional housing, services and support for the elderly homeless (58+) in the Greater Danbury Area.

Description:
The Shelter of the Cross provides shelter in a home-like environment with shared responsibilities, food for three meals per day, counseling, support, and other rehabilitative services, such as daily living and socialization skills to our residents. Our goal is for residents to move into permanent, independent housing within two years. The average stay at the Shelter of the Cross is 11 months. Follow-up services are provided for 18 months after residents move into permanent housing.

Residents are asked to commit to a program that will help them change their lives. They work with a case manager to develop a personal plan that is meaningful for each of them, and learn how to take the small steps that will lead them to success. They are encouraged to look back at the issues that led to becoming homeless and to address these issues in a supportive and safe environment.

History:
The Shelter of the Cross was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1993 and opened its doors to our first home on 18 Aaron Samuels Blvd. in March, 1998.
Since that time we have served 67 individuals; however we have had over 300 referrals to our home.
