Voluntary Services for the Blind provides various types of volunteer services to visually impaired residents of Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Description:
Voluntary Services for the Blind seeks to improve the quality of life for visually impaired residents of Fairfield County, Connecticut. It provides services entirely through volunteers who work either directly or indirectly with visually impaired clients. Volunteers encourage blind persons to function independently and to fully utilize their abilities. Services being provided include: drivers, readers, shopping assistants, home clerical assistants and friendly visitors.
History:
Voluntary Services for the Blind was founded in 1993 by Claudette A. Tallon and James H. Waddington. It initially functioned as a community based project of the Darien Lions Club. In 1996 it was independently incorporated as a 501c3 corporation. The organization has been recognized both locally and nationally for its service to the visually impaired community. On March 9, 2001, it was named the nation's Daily Point of Light by the Points of Light Foundation. In the 14 years since its inception, the program has provided more than 83,000 volunteer hours of service directly to its clients.
