To develop awareness of and interest in health careers for youth from ethnic and racial backgrounds underrepresented in the health careers.
Description:
The Youth Health Service Corps is an Area Health Education Center program that teaches diverse high school students about careers in health care. The students are trained in topics ranging from medical ethics to disease prevention. They receive CPR/AED certification, and instruction in blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and blood glucose. The Corps students use their knowledge to make a valuable volunteer contribution in health care settings. In addition, they can participate in four special projects: oral health, nutrition, emergency preparedness, and sickle cell anemia education.
History:
We are a ten year old healthcare education and awareness initiative, affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
