New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition
The New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition is a not for profit agency created to help people that are in need of emergency overnight shelter during the colder months of the year (November- April). Our vision is to continue to operate an emergency shelter and work on raising funds enough to operate a permanent location that will operate all year.
Description:
The New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition is run by all volunteers and is operated out of donated space from churches in the Town of New Milford. We normally provide services from 10 to 15 people a night. Coordinators check in guests at 8:45 PM nightly and two overnight staff volunteers stay from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am. Overnight volunteers make sure that guests settle into only the specific areas of the building we are allowed in, and turn off lights. Overnight volunteers sleep during the night and wake at 5:30am to wake guests and leave together at 6:00 am. The shelter operates seven days a week during the months of October to April.
History:
The New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition was formed in 2001 during an extended time of very cold weather. Over 200 members of the community came together to help our neighbors that were living in tents or behind buildings. The next week an emergency shelter system was started. The first year we served 20 people per night. By offering an emergency place to sleep we have helped many people in our community obtain jobs and permanent housing and start a new chapter in their lives. The Coalition in 2005 became a not for profit corporation.
