Music Haven is seeking motivated, socially-minded, string instrument playing interns with a sincere interest in building community and mentoring youth who are often labeled as “atrisk.” Music Haven, like the children in our program, is a small organization in the process of growing and developing. The energy and flexibility of the staff and interns are essential to Music Haven’s success, and practice Buddies internship position requires at least a weekly commitment to teaching in New Haven. Responsibilities include: o Providing weekly musical and personal support to at least one student once a week. o Listening, encouraging, and teaching (musically or otherwise) one student in the time before or after his or her lesson. o Occasionally may require assisting with program activities, including lessons, concert trips, performance parties, benefit concerts, and community events.
Skills Needed: o Moderate to high level of competency in violin, viola, or cello o Passion for working with children ages 6-12 o Experience or interest in teaching beginning string instruments o Willingness to collaborate with staff, parents, or other interns o Flexibility and interest in working in diverse settings and diverse communities o Spanish speaking skills a plus
