People to connect with people on the final journey.....to hold a patient's hand, offer respite for a care giver, visit with your registered pet therapy team.....offer the gift of presence, sing a song, read a poem.... Having a visit from a volunteer - just for our patients, just to say hi - and offer some friendship and comfort is what we ask of our volunteers. One of our patients told their volunteer, "I love you - you are the only on who comes to see me - just because you want to!" we have had a woman who was non-verbal - reach out her hand to pet a visiting dog - no words - but her eyes said it all.....a hour or two a week - can make a world of difference to a lonely patient.
There is an application and interview process after which you will be accepted into our free hospice volunteer training program - This training covers basic Hospice 101 - history of hospice, communication, grief and loss, death and dying, and the role of the volunteer...
