Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on November 20, 2009 |
Due to a very high rate of the stray and "feral" cat population in Danbury, we are looking for families that are willing to foster and take into their homes, pregnant female cats that are about to give birth or female cats that have already given birth to kittens. Normally, we trap, spay/neuter and return these feral animals back to their colony. However, when trapping a pregnant cat close to delivery, we try to find foster homes for these animals. Once the kittens are delivered, weaned and sterilized we find them adoptive homes. These females and litters are not able to be housed at our shelter due to their vulnerability to illnesses. As a result, we are looking for foster families that will take in these cats from the time they give birth up until the kittens are able to fend for themselves usually around 6-8 weeks. The responsibilities of this includes: *Ability to provide a safe, quiet, healthy environment for the Mother cat and her kittens. *Ability to monitor health of animals and advise DAWS of any immediate issues. *Ability to bring cat/kittens to shelter for various vet visits and open house appointments for adoptions. *Ability to provide a safe environment to begin proper socialization of the kittens. These foster homes could contain children, however ideally the children would be aged 10 and over. If you think you would enjoy this experience please contact DAWS.
Requirements: *Meet with and be approved by our Foster Program chair person.
