DSABC Mentor for Danbury Public School Students Grades K-12

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 8, 2009

The DSABC mentor is a friend and positive role model, who works one on one with a student on activities such as reading aloud, visiting the school library or gym, playing games such as chess or checkers, helping with homework or classwork, or just talking, listening and sharing experiences. The mentor works with the teacher, and school staff providing extra support and encouragement to help the student achieve his/her potential. The mentor can serve (if they so desire) as a tutor in specific courses and/or help expand awareness of career options and basic work habits, while demonstrating the values of punctuality, dependability and reliability.

Mentors are expected to commit to an hour a week for a minimum commitment of one school year.
All new mentors are recruited, interviewed, screened and trained prior to being matched with a student. Each new mentor must undergo a crminal background check, the cost of that check is waived. Each school hosts an orientation session where mentors learn specifics about the school they have been placed at.
