Arts for Healing is a nonprofit that is dedicated to providing creative arts therapy services and programs for people with special needs in Fairfield County. Through the practice of therapy in music and art, complementary art programs and outreach, we aim to reach the area's most isolated individuals and their families.

Description:
Arts for Healing provides individual and group integrated music and art therapy at 24 Grove Street in New Canaan and also does group programs in schools and other community centers. Our clients include children, adolescents and adults with learning and developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, pervasive developmental disorders and other neurological dysfunctions, the elderly, cancer and stroke victims and those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, as well as individuals with brain injuries and physical disabilities.

History:
Arts for Healing was founded by Karen Nisenson and Josephine Mason in 2000. Karen Nisenson created the methodology of Integrated Music and Art Therapy (IMAT) which uses music and art to motivate language development by stimulating neurological pathways in sensory processing. Visual and auditory processing are stimulated simultaneously within a trusting relationship, creating new pathways for cognitive development. IMAT is a psychodynamic and developmental approach that uses the creative process to work through psychological issues of individuals living with autism, neurological disorders and severe physical disabilities. Using the arts to tap potential creativity, individuals are free to explore feelings, while goals in enhanced communication skills, sensory integration, self-awareness and self-confidence are reached.
