Board of Education and Services for the Blind

Our mission is to provide quality educational and rehabilitative services to all people who are legally blind or deaf-blind and children who are visually impaired at no cost to our clients or their families. BESB needs volunteers who will help these clients with their shopping, driving, reading and sorting mail; all activities that are key to remaining in their homes.

Description:
BESB needs volunteers who will help their blind neighbors with activities such as shopping, driving, reading and sorting mail; all activities that are key to remaining in their homes. Volunteers can pick their own hours and most clients live within 5-7 miles of your home or work.

History:
The State of Connecticut Board of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB) is the only state agency that provides a comprehensive range of services to children who are legally blind or visually impaired and adults who are legally blind. Established in 1893, BESB is the oldest continually-operating state agency in the United States that provides services to individuals with visual limitations.

BESB's mission is to enable its consumers to become more self-sufficient and to maximize their participation in the community, at school, and in employment settings. It is important to note that most people who are legally blind retain a significant degree of partial vision. Therefore, it is crucial to connect with professionals at BESB who may offer individualized services.
