Agency Details:
FISH of Stamford, Inc.
FISH is an all-volunteer group that provides transportation in the Stamford area for those of all ages who have no other means of reaching health facilities. Volunteer drivers provide transportation in their own vehicles Monday thru Thursday 9AM to 4PM. Those requesting rides must be ambulatory - no wheel chairs can be accommodated.
Description:
FISH works quite simply: a voice mail service receives phone calls. Volunteers access the messages Monday thru Friday 9AM to 5Pm. The volunteer scheduled that day calls as soon as possible the person requiring transportation to a medical appointment. The volunteer obtains all the pertinent information and then phones the driver scheduled for the day of the requested appointment. The driver verifies the pick up time with the rider.
History:
FISH of Stamford was organized in 1972. The origin was in England and FISH spread rapidly as an international concept of assisting individuals in personal need. The letters of FISH have been interpreted as meaning FRIENDS IN SERVICE HERE or FEEL I SHOULD HELP. FISH is completely non-profit. FISH of Stamford has no paid staff nor an office, only a voice mail service and a post office box.
