It is the mission of CTE to counter the basic causes of poverty in the Stamford, Darien, and Greenwich communities by making available services and activities which help reduce the physical, economic, and psychological barriers to self-sufficiency for low- income individuals, families and communities, giving them the ability to rise out of poverty.
Description:
CTE's approach, which has evolved over three decades of working with the poor, provides a Family Self-Sufficiency model of service delivery. It is a comprehensive, holistic, case management approach that looks at all of a family's poverty related issues and works with the entire family to develop a plan that addresses all of these issues. This holistic approach is practiced throughout all of CTE's programs, which include those offered through our Education and Youth, Family Development, Employment and Training, Alternative to Incarceration, and Viewpoint Recovery (Substance Abuse) Components.
History:
CTE, Inc. is the federally designated Community Action Agency for the Greater Stamford area, serving the low-income populations of Stamford, Greenwich, and Darien, CT. Established in 1965 as a result of President Johnson's War on Poverty, CTE provides services such as after school programs to help youth achieve academic success; job and life skills, and computer training skills to assist people in becoming viable members of the workforce; a substance abuse treatment program to promote the process of recovery; and an alternative to incarceration program, which promotes the rehabilitation of offenders. In addition, we were at the forefront by offering Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), which create asset building opportunities for low-income individuals, providing them an opportunity to purchase their first home, capitalize a small business, or continue their education.
