Greenhouse volunteers

Volunteers are needed at the New Canaan Nature Center’s greenhouse, Sally Waters Herb Garden, James L. Crider Memorial Bird and Butterfly Garden, the Swallen Wildflower Garden, Susan B. Hanson Memorial Naturalists' Garden and on our natural trails.

Gain skills and experience in greenhouse science, horticulture ,native plant gardening, vegetable and flower growing, organic gardening and vegetable growing. Specific opportunities for volunteers include:

Greenhouse skills: care of our plant collections for use as educational tools, interpreting the collections through signage and lesson plans, plant care such as watering, feeding and propagation by seed and cuttings, repotting plants and non toxic pest control methods.

Grounds work: trail maintenance, pest monitoring and release of beneficial insect predators, outside pruning, plant grooming.

Outdoor Gardens: garden maintenance, plant identification and care, assisting in teaching or class preparation and growing plants for sales.

Volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors.

Directions:
 From the Merritt Parkway (Route 15), Exit 37: Make a LEFT at the end of the ramp onto Route 124. Pass over the parkway heading north along South Avenue into New Canaan. Follow Route 124 through town. At the fourth traffic light turn RIGHT onto Cherry Street. At the next traffic light turn LEFT onto Main Street, which becomes Oenoke Ridge. Continue about 1/4 mile north of town to NCNC on the LEFT, just past St. Mark's Episcopal Church (on the right). Follow the drive to the end; park in the lower lot
