Volunteer Coordinator, Friends Used Book Shops

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 15, 2008

This position is part of the dynamic Friends Used Books Stores "all-volunteer professional" team. The Friends of Ferguson Library is a congenial, hard-working group dedicated to the love of books and the importance of community libraries. This is a fascinating, fun, team-supported opportunity. Our Shops not only fund Friends and Library activities, they also act as vibrant, busy community gathering places.

This position is a crucial part of our management team. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with Shop Managers and the Chair to develop procedures and set a positive tone for the entire organization. Specifically, duties include (directly or through a Volunteer Committee):

• Initial screening, selection, and placement of a volunteer staff sufficient to operate the Shops. Arrange initial orientation and training.

• Ensure all aspects of the volunteer experience are positive and beneficial for both the volunteers and the organization. Recommend appropriate policies to the Chair and the Book Shop Committee.

• Maintain a group of experienced volunteers who can provide line training and support for newer volunteers. Coordinate with the Chair and the Shop Managers in all aspects of the volunteer experience.

• Have a good understanding of every volunteer’s interests, skills, preferences, and availability.

• Supervise preparation and communication of shift schedules and adequate shift coverage.

• With IT assistance, supervise Volgistics web-based volunteer database and attendance records. Publish monthly statistics and an annual report to the Friends Board.

• Act as first line provider of “volunteer care” – anniversary awards, thank you notes, life event acknowledgments, etc.

• Take appropriate action in the event of persistent volunteer absences, irregularities, or other problems.

• Ensure the Volunteer Handbook is available to volunteers at the Shops.

• Write relevant copy for the Volunteer Newsletter.

This position requires a professional presence, strong interpersonal skills, a team attitude, willingness to direct others, and comfort with juggling multiple tasks at a time. Our 125+ volunteers are a highly diverse group, which makes for a fun and exciting experience.

Expect to be on-site frequently but much work can be done from home. You can vary your schedule as time and organizational needs allows.
