Volunteer to clean up our shores!

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 6, 2009

Save the Sound, a program of Connecticut Fund for the Environment, is dedicated to improving the health of Long Island Sound, and you can help! Our Coastal Cleanup Program supports beach cleanups along coastal and inland shores year-round. In addition to improving the quality of our beaches and watershed, we record data from all of our cleanups in an effort to discover the causes of marine litter. We use this information to educate the public in order to stop the problem at its source.

We are always looking for volunteers to serve as Cleanup Captains around Connecticut. The responsibilities of a Cleanup Captain include picking a beach or river to clean, helping to recruit volunteer helpers and instructing them on safety issues and the importance of data cards. Save the Sound will help you recruit volunteers and promote the event, as well as provide trash bags, data cards (to record data about the trash found during your event), first aid kits, and promotional tools like press releases.

As a Cleanup Captain, you may pick any date that is convenient for you and your volunteers. If you are definitely interested in becoming a volunteer Cleanup Captain, please contact us as soon as possible and we will send you more information and a registration form.

If you would like to volunteer but are unable to organize your own cleanup, please keep an eye on our website, www.savethesound.org, where cleanups near you will be listed as soon as they are confirmed. Cleanup Captains at each cleanup site will need groups of volunteers to pick up litter and record data about what is picked up. Each cleanup will be listed with the contact information of the Captain who is organizing the event. You may contact them directly to find out the details of when, where, and what to bring.

Please consider participating in this great effort to clean up Connecticut's shores! In 2008, more than 1,700 volunteers took part in one of Save the Sound's 66 cleanups, collecting over 15,000 pounds of marine debris along 69 miles of Connecticut shoreline!
