Academic and Recreation Volunteers Needed

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on April 13, 2009

The Boys and Girls Club of Stamford offers an after school program that caters to every public school in Stamford, as well as some private schools. The youth in the Program range in age from 6 to 18 and are separated into groups according to age. They stay in these groups for all of their activities at the Club.

One of the main focuses at the Club is education. Children are expected to complete their homework before venturing on to any other activity. Our Learning Center is equipped with all the necessary materials to complete their homework successfully. If they get stuck or need assistance, there are always tutors present in the tutor room. The schedule at the Club calls for a rotation every 45 minutes; 1 hour is devoted to homework - 3:45 and 4:45. Children are free to get additional assistance in the Learning Center if needed.

Each group follows their daily schedule, which includes reading, art, computers, music, gym, and the big game room, where they participate in activities such as ping-pong, pool, and foosball. In each of these areas, there is an instructor who provides programs for the children in each group. Classes are structured similarly to the children's school day.

In addition, the Boys and Girls Club offers Saturday Academy. This Program offers small group instruction to students that are struggling in particular areas or children who are looking for additional enrichment. The areas of focus are reading, writing, and math. Individualized programs are created for each child based on what their needs are.

On Thursday evenings the Club stays open until 8:00 p.m. for teen night. This gives youth ages 13 - 18 a chance to come and have the Club to themselves. Teens can use the gym or computer lab or receive academic assistance with homework. On Friday evenings, middle school students, ages 11-13, have activities available to them until 8:00 p.m.

During the summer months, the Club has its Summer Fun Program, which is a full day camp. During the eight weeks of camp the children receive all of the programs that they do for after school. Field trips are taken weekly to places like Roller Magic and Lake Compounce.

The Club is always looking for volunteers in all of our programs. If you are interested in volunteering on a consistent basis, and feel that you can offer something to the children that are served here, please contact Mark Ferrer, Director of Operations, to set up an appointment. All volunteers must be interviewed and go through a background check.
