Tucson's Birthday In August
Logo

For the fourth year, Tucson's Birthday celebrates our community throughout the month of August with as many as 100 events featuring our unique history, culture and environment.

Description:
When Cele Peterson first imagined the month-long Tucson’s Birthday Celebration in August, 2006, she had one thing in mind: Community.

Cele has been in business in Tucson for more than 75 years, and she has special feelings about our town’s unique history, culture and environment. She believes they have given Tucsonans a sense of community like no other. She wants to make sure that we never lose that, no matter how we grow.

She decided that as a first step we should all share our own experiences of this city, and the best way to get that to happen was to make it fun! She envisioned something like a family birthday party, where everyone brings something that says as much about themselves as about the guest of honor!

She picked August for the celebration because Tucsonans have a tradition of August fiestas that goes back many generations, when Tucsonans feted the town’s patron saint, San Agustin. This tradition lives on in the annual Fiesta de San Agustin. Since Tucson’s 1975 Centennial, we have also celebrated the establishment of the Presidio de Tucson on August 20, 1775.

With help from a few friends, Cele rallied a host of Tucson organizations and businesses to plan a party for the whole community, a month-long series of events involving Tucsonans of all ages; a wide range of cultural, environmental and neighborhood organizations;, libraries, parks, historic sites and national monuments; Reid Park Zoo and the Pima Air and Space Museum; the University of Arizona; faith-based organizations; and groups representing every culture and ethnicity that’s contributed to our heritage. The first year there were 60 events, and the past two years there have been more than 100!
