Reading Seed Children's Literacy Program
Logo

The Reading Seed is a children's literacy program that recruits and trains volunteer reading coaches who go into the elementary schools in Pima County to help children in grades 1 through 3 learn to read. It is our goal to provide a reading coach for every child in Pima County that needs one so that all children are reading on or above grade level by the end of the third grade. We help children learn to read so they can read to learn.

Description:
Our reading coaches work one-on-one with the same child for 30 minutes once a week, to build self-confidence and make reading fun. Our coaches share their love of reading with their students in a safe, caring, supportive environment in school where the child learns to take risks and build their reading skills. A volunteer reading coach goes through a 3 hour training workshop and then commits to 1 hour each week during the school year (while the volunteer is in Tucson). Winter visitors are welcome too.
Now that we are expanding and offering our reading coaches to nine school districts and over 100 schools in Pima County, we need to recruit at least 500 additional tutors each year for the next 5 years to meet the needs of these schools, teachers, and children and reach our goal of all children in Pima County reading at or above grade level by the end of the 3rd grade.
