Taxes prepared by VITA Volunteers bring millions of dollars back to Tucson working families. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers assist low to moderate-income families, those with disabilities, non-English speaking individuals, and seniors, with free tax preparation.
Description:
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) provides working families in the Tucson area with free tax preparation. The VITA program allows families and individuals to receive every tax benefit available to them, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). By volunteering, you can directly help boost a working family's income by up to 40%. Last year VITA volunteers prepared 3,361 tax returns, brought back to families $2.1 million in EITC funds and $4.4 million in overall federal refunds plus saved families over $800,000 in tax preparation fees. By increasing income to working families the VITA program directly effects the family's or individual's ability to become or remain financially stable. You make a difference. For 2008 our goal is to once again increase the number of low-income working families served, and volunteers are the only way we can make this happen. Certified IRS volunteers provide training. Trainings vary based on the volunteer position desired and the experience of each volunteer. This year we will be offering even more flexible schedules for training. A comment form one of our VITA volunteers: "The Best Part of Being a VITA Volunteer was the genuine sense of appreciation from the taxpayer when they hear how much money they are getting back from the IRS”
