DIRECT is a consumer-directed, community-based advocacy organization that promotes independent living and offers a variety of programs for all people with disabilities which encourages them to achieve their full potential and to participate in the community.
Description:
DIRECT provides information & referral services, peer mentoring/counseling, individual & systemic advocacy services, skill training, SSA benefits counseling, home access modifications, attendant care training & referral, and outreach services. DIRECT has various programs that either teach, counsel or provide accessibility depending on an individual's need to have control over their own life based on a choice of options that minimize reliance on others in making decisions and in performing everyday activities. This includes managing one's affairs, participating in day-to-day life in the community, fulfilling a range of social roles, and making decisions that lead to self-determination and the minimization of physical or psychological dependence upon others. Independence is a relative concept which each individual defines personally. Independent living is not dependent upon programs that foster functional independence, Instead it is based upon the individual's ability to choose and achieve a desired lifestyle and to function freely in society.
