Tohono Chul Park
The mission of Tohono Chul Park is to enrich people's lives by providing them the opportunity to find peace and inspiration in a place of beauty, to experience the wonders of the Sonoran Desert, and to gain knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage of this region.
Description:
Tohono Chul Park is located in the sprawling urban environment of one of the fastest growing cities in the United States: Tucson. Residential housing, strip shopping centers, and non-native plants are quickly replacing the pristine Sonoran Desert. Our goal and purpose is to inspire everyone - visitors, community members, and children - with the desire to learn how to live WITH our desert home. The Park serves as a model for others to learn to be participant stewards of this fragile environment. Volunteers are an essential part of Tohono Chul Park: without them many of the Park's programs and offerings simply would not exist. This has been true since the Park was founded in 1985. Over the years, our volunteers have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of Park visitors, from school children growing up in the Sonoran Desert to international travelers interested in getting to know Tucson. Tohono Chul Park recognizes that our region's unique cultures, history, and ecology are as interdependent as they are important. We cannot protect the Sonoran Desert without considering the impact of our cultural values. Similarly, we cannot protect the unique cultural heritage of our region without emphasizing its connection to the natural environment. For this reason, volunteers can take on a variety of roles at the Park, and each is as reflective of the Park's mission as the next (from educator to gardener, museum shops to special events). There are over 300 active volunteers currently committed to the Park, yet there is no typical Park volunteer. Students, professionals and retirees have all found a rewarding experience at Tohono Chul, and the Park's many departments provide an outlet for a wide range of interests and abilities.
