Humane Society Of Southern Arizona
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is a nonprofit 501(C)3 organization dedicated to the general welfare, sheltering and placement of animals; prevention of cruelty to animals and overpopulation; education concerning humane treatment of animals, and involvement with other animal welfare issues. Our vision is to end euthanasia of adoptable companion animals... where one day, no healthy animal will be euthanized for lack of a home, for lack of space, for lack of compassion.
Description:
The Humane Society receives approximately 16,000 abandoned and homeless companion animals each year. Our caring staff and volunteers work hard to find loving, permanent homes for these abandoned animals both in-shelter, and at off-site adoption locations and at events. Our Education Dept. teaches animal welfare and compassion, and the humane treatment of animals to approximately 25,000 students each year. Our Community Outreach staff continuously educates the community about the importance of spaying and neutering, animal welfare, recognizing and reporting animal abuse, and gives numerous presentations to professional organizations to raise public awareness of animal welfare. The Society also sets up informational booths at various events throughout the southern Arizona community to further educate the public. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is one of the most respected shelters in the United States. We have hosted several Humane Society of the United States events, attended by more than 25 humane societies throughout the U.S. We are continuously progressing to help the homeless animals, and to help combat the critical pet overpopulation that southern Arizona is facing, our Spay/Neuter Clinic performs approximately 14,000 sterilization surgeries each year. These surgeries are offered to the public at a low cost, and are subsidized through various programs for those who could otherwise not afford to spay or neuter their pet. Recently, the Society embarked on a new TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program, involving the trapping and sterilization of feral cats. Orphaned puppies and kittens who arrive in our shelter without their mothers are placed into volunteer foster homes until they are old enough to go into adoptions. The Humane Society relies on our volunteers - they are the backbone of this organization. Our volunteers are crucial in helping save lives - we could not realize our mission without them.
