Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation Of Southern Arizona
Candlelighters is a parent-run organized support network of families in Tucson and Southern Arizona who have or have had a child with cancer. Candlelighters educates, supports, serves and advocates for families of children with cancer, bereaved families, survivors of childhood cancer, and the professionals that care for us.
Description:
Candlelighters volunteers can help at our monthly events for families with a child with cancer, which provide a low-stress way for families to meet each other and celebrate life with those who understand. We need people to participate in the children's activities while the parents get a chance to offer each other mutual support. Candlelighters volunteers can help at our annual family camp. This is a three-day weekend retreat for the entire family held in the last weekend in June. We have need for people to help with food preparation and children's activities. Candlelighters volunteers can help with data entry and newsletter mailings. We also seek Spanish translation, for our written documents and at our events Our Goals: To link parent to parent, family to family, group to group To ease frustration and fears through sharing of feelings and experiences To exchange information on research, treatment and community resources To breakdown the social isolation of families To provide guidance in coping with childhood cancer's effect on a child, parents, siblings and family To identify patient and family needs so that medical and social systems respond adequately To provide support for bereaved families To be an emotional support system of second families for each other
