Experience Corps
Tucson is the 13th site in the United States to host Experience Corps. Offering adventures in service for Americans over age 55, Experience Corps solves serious social problems by improving literacy. Adults share their personal experiences to connect with individual students and improve their reading in this tutoring/mentoring program.
Just a few hours each week in a neighborhood school can change a young person's life - and yours. For those who commit to 12 -15 hours per week (or 450 hours per school year) a stipend of $108 bi-weekly is paid to help cover expenses. Volunteers who wish to serve less time each week, or require a more flexible schedule, are also needed.
Program requirements include a twelve hour tutor training, orientation and fingerprinting. Pre-service, as well as in-service, training is provided at no charge. Supervision and peer interaction is essential to the success of the program and the wonderful feeling of satisfaction and reward expressed by the Experience Corps tutors.
