 Letter Carriers' Food Drive 2009

May 9, 2009

The Community Food Bank organizes volunteer support for the annual Letter Carrier's Food Drive.  Last year over 300,000 pounds of food was collected locally -- in one day!

It's the Food Bank's largest food drive of the year and lots of help is needed to make it a success.  This year's drive is Saturday, May 9.  Individuals and groups are welcome to participate.  Minimum age is 16.

How does it work?  Letter carriers return to the post office with food collected on their routes.  Volunteers transfer food from the carriers' trucks into semi-trailers; they should be able to lift 10 pounds repeatedly.  A Food Bank staff member serves as "Team Captain" at each post office.  Or, volunteer drivers can use their own pick up to collect food donations on rural routes.

Group help is needed in two ways:

ü      on May 9 to transfer food or collect it rurally.  If interested, contact the Food Bank soon as possible

ü      to sort the donated food after May 12th. A three hour period of time is preferred Monday through Friday, anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

When and where is help needed on May 9?  Click here for details.

Food drives are hard work but great fun, and they help to alleviate the tragedy of hunger in our town.
