          YVC Summer Block

  2008

The Youth Volunteer Corps, for ages 11 – 18, engages youth in challenging educational or service projects.  Hang out with like-minded new friends while you develop an appreciation of the diversity of Tucson and build a lifetime ethic of service.  If you’re excited about activism and helping your community, YVC is for you.

Projects are diverse; some are on the edge … creative pursuits like painting or film; helping the homeless or hungry; learning about sustainability in the desert; dressing up in character costumes while reading to preschool groups; working with animals (“Gato” Save the Cats!); receiving training in community emergency response; and lots more. Work inside or outside; use your brains or your brawn; sign up for one half-day project or 8 weeks of projects.

Sure, you’ll meet new friends, but it’s even more fun if you bring your best bud along.

If you’re a highly motivated youth leader, you can apply to the nationally recognized Greater Tucson Youth Leadership Program.  There are two components of GTYLP.

·        The two-week Youth Leadership Institute exposes you to important issues facing our town through personal contact with prominent leaders who face these challenges on a daily basis.

·        The Youth Boardsmanship Institute occurs for one day and trains you in the basics on nonprofit organizations and best practices of a board of directors.  Volunteer Center staff advocate for graduates as they seek positions on local boards of directors.

·        There is no fee for GTYLP this summer!

Prizes are awarded upon completion of 30 hours of community service.

How do you sign up?

First: complete a YVC application packet.  The packet lists projects offered this summer and includes a permission slip and other informational stuff.

To get a YVC application packet:

  1. Visit the Volunteer Center of Southern Arizona and pick up an application packet.
  2. Call the Volunteer Center (881-3300) and ask to be mailed an application packet.
  3. Click back to the Welcome Page, search under “Youth Volunteer Corps” and click on an opportunity that interests you.  It will have contact information for the Team Leader.

Second: to sign up for a specific project, contact the Team Leader for projects that interest you).

Time/Place: Projects run from 9-4 on weekdays; most projects are a half day; locations are across Tucson.

All YVC and GTYLP applicants must submit an application,

completed by a parent or guardian,

 before they can participate.

YVC projects and events are supervised by trained AmeriCorps Team Leaders.  The Leaders are overseen by Dave Chandler, Volunteer Center Associate Director.

We hope to see you on the YVC team this summer!
