Protect the Rights of People Living with Disabilities
The Human Rights Committee conducts independent oversight to protect the rights of people with disabilities. The group meets once monthly to (1) review behavioral treatment plans for possible rights violations; (2) review incident reports and research proposals; and (3) make recommendations about changes to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities.
We hope that an ethnically diverse group, reflective of our community, will respond to the call to serve and to embrace this essential, rewarding work.Candidates should have a sincere interest in the rights of people with disabilities, have the ability to read reports and programs, be able to maintain strict confidentiality, and regularly attend the monthly meeting. Volunteers may have professional or non-professional backgrounds.Current committee members include people who are interested in social justice and in protecting the rights of all people, particularly the disabled and their families.Professional volunteers include clergy, psychologists, attorneys, social workers, teachers and physicians.
Meetings are the last Monday of each month from ; members are asked to participate for a minimum of one year.In addition, members are expected to read packets, regarding incidences that have occurred, prior to discussion at meetings. This time commitment is about 5.5 hours monthly.
The Human Rights Committee is sponsored by the Division of Developmental Disabilities.
