Boy Scouts Of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council
The mission of Boy Scouts of America is to serve others by helping instill values in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime in achieving their full potential.
History:
It was two separate events, but both are linked to the program we enjoy and serve today. In one corner of the world, William Boyce loses his way in the London fog late at night, but is led to his destination by a young man who refuses a reward. In another, a Knoxville businessman and philanthropist reads an article about a new program for boys that catches his attention. “The Unknown Scout’s” good turn on a foggy street helped Boyce find the way to his destination, and later, to a meeting with Lord Robert Stephenson Smythe Baden-Powell, a British hero of the Boer Wars of South Africa. Here in East Tennessee, a story in a trade publication turns the “Boys Excelsior Club” into “Knoxville Troop 1.” Scouting began in the USA in 1910 and February 2010 will mark our 100th Anniversary. The Knoxville Council was formed in 1912 and the name was changed to Great Smoky Mountain Council in 1951.
