People of Faith, Mentoring Children of Promise. There are over 800 children in Knox County with one or both parents in prison. Statistically, without intervention these children of promise have are 70% more likely of becoming incarcerated as adults. We’ve got to stop the cycle. Research shows that children with mentors do better in school, get along better with their families and are less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol than their peers. Having a mentor is great for any child, but for a child whose parents are in prison, it’s a lifeline. A mentor shows the child by example that there is a better way. Mentors teach our children of promise life skills that can save their lives. We are looking for mentors to spend one-on-one time with these “children of promise”.
You must be 19 years old or older to be a mentor, pass a criminal background check, and have a valid driver's license and automobile insurance. Mentors are required to spend at least one hour per week (4 hours per month) for one year with a child doing various activities, such as reading, going to the park, or playing football.
