Advance the Common Good with United Way

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 31, 2009

Volunteers are at the heart of what United Way does. Throughout the year over 200 trained volunteers work to recommend informed funding decisions for all United Way donations that are not specifically designated to a particular agency.

After orientation, teams of volunteers meet to review and evaluate applications for funding from local nonprofit organizations. Volunteers make site visits, review program outcomes, carefully evaluate applications and meet with program representatives before making funding decisions.

The goal of the Outcome Based Investment (OBI) Process is to effectively and responsibly distribute funds raised during the United Way campaign to meet local needs and build a stronger community through wise resource investment and management.

Please remember that the time required for these responsibilities encompasses a 12- month cycle and includes:

• One summer orientation session [2 hours]

• A scheduled fall meeting for each committee [1-2 hours]

• Two agency site visits are expected; the first in Sept/Oct and the second in Nov/Dec. [The time commitment will vary based on the number of programs reviewed.]

• Prior to the February meetings, all agency proposals should be reviewed by all committee members [3-10 hours]

• During the entire month of February, volunteers are asked to meet once a week for 3 hours to participate in agency interviews and decide final monetary recommendations.
