History:
The Relief Nursery was launched in Eugene, Oregon, 33 years ago. It was created by members of the Junior League in that community, who saw a need that was unmet by existing public and private programs. Over the course of three decades, the Relief Nursery has grown to include 8 primary sites, and is currently serving over 1,200 families. A few outcomes/success rates include: Child Abuse Reports: After one year with the program, 95% of the families receive no further reports of abuse of neglect. Foster Care: 98% of the children attending the Relief Nursery require no foster care and are able to remain safely at home. Healthy Development: 90% of the children attending the Relief Nursery are developing at age-appropriate levels and 10% receive special education services on-site. Clean and sober lifestyle: 85% of parents with a history of substance abuse who participate in the Relief Nursery alcohol and drug recovery support program are still clean and sober seventeen months after treatment. The Relief Nursery is being piloted in two Texas locations, Austin and Collin County, at the request of and with the support of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
