The mission of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is to establish teams of local volunteers who can contribute their skills and expertise to promote public health throughout the year and to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies.

Description:
In the event of a large-scale public health emergency in Collin County, persons 18 years and older with a variety of skills and experiences, both medical and non-medical, will be needed to assist and support the existing emergency management infrastructure. MRC volunteers supplement existing local emergency and public health resources by supporting local public health initiatives, assisting local hospitals and health departments with surge personnel needs, participating in mass prophylaxis and vaccination exercises and community disaster drills, and training with local emergency response partners.

History:
The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a federal program that was founded after President Bush's 2002 State of the Union Address, in which he asked all Americans to volunteer in support of their country. MRC is a specialized component of Citizen Corps, a national network of volunteers dedicated to ensuring hometown security. Citizen Corps, along with the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Peace Corps are all part of the President's USA Freedom Corps, which promotes volunteerism and service throughout the nation.
