Agency Details:
The Crape Myrtle Trails Of McKinney Foundation
Mission: To create "The World Collection of Crape Myrtles", consisting of all known species and varieties of crape myrtles in public-area plantings throughout the City of McKinney with the goals of providing beautification, as well as environmental, educational and economic enrichment through unique public-private collaborations. Vision: To enhance the ambiance of this historic and fast growing North Texas community, and to become a major tourism-draw for the North Texas area within the next five years.
Description:
It is the hope that the Trails will provide civic pride in beautification. It is expected that the Trails will soon gain area-wide, state and even national attention and, as a result, that travel and tourism will gain a big boost each summer.
History:
The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney was formed in 1998. Initial plantings of Crape Myrtles were made in the medians of Eldorado Parkway from Pecan Grove Cemetery west toward Stonebridge Drive. According to Neil Sperry, founder of the Crape Myrtle Trails organization and current board president, “the City has been so supportive of our dream of ultimately planting “ribbons of color,” not only in the medians, but also along the streets so that there will be corridors of color in June, July, and August that will set our community apart like no other.”
