CASA of Collin County
CASA of Collin County will provide trained community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the court system. The ultimate goal is for the volunteers to be a voice for these children in court. The result is that each child is placed into a safe, loving home where he or she can thrive.
Description:
With the support, guidance, and supervision of the professional staff at CASA, volunteers from all walks of life, ages, and ethnic groups act as court appointed special advocates for abused and neglected children. These advocates serve as the court's eyes and ears to help the Judge make an informed, timely decision in the child's best interest. A volunteer must complete 30 hours of training prior to becoming sworn in by a Judge as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. We ask that the volunteers make a one year commitment. The children deserve to have one consistent person who advocates for their best interests throughout the child's time in foster care.
History:
CASA of Collin County was incorporated in 1991 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. In 1992, CASA advocated for 17 of the 97 children in foster care. Today we are assigned as the Guardian Ad Litem for all of the children in foster care in Collin County. Last year, 2007, we served 740 Collin County children.

Overall Experience

My CASA experience has given me more than I'll ever be able to give it.
 |
I have volunteered for a lot of organizations in my life, but I have to put CASA of Collin County at the VERY top of my list. I have been a CASA Volunteer Advocate for CASA of Collin County for three months and I love it! After having my first case for a month, I accepted two more--I just can't get enough. True, some of "my children" have had really terrible things happen in their lives. However, these children are heroes-they continue to fight for their childhood and many overcome their past and go on to flourish in their new environments! That in and of itself is truly inspirational. They remind you of what is important in life. On top of this, the CASA of Collin County staff is TOP NOTCH. You truly feel appreciated-they know your name when you walk into the office, they call you to make sure your case is going OK and to see if you need someone to talk to, and they organize appreciation dinners and meetings where you can share your experiences and meet other CASA Volunteers. I recogize that CASA is not for every one. However, it is for me, and it has made me a better person. If you truly want to make a difference, this is the place for you. posted by swobocop on May 26, 2003 |
