Description:
We believe that we have a significant part to play within the city of Plainfield and its surrounding areas. We believe as a religious organization we are not only commissioned to bring spiritual restoration to the lives of mankind but we also have a social and moral responsibility to our community and to our fellowmen to meet the needs that are within our reach. The Summer Enrichment Program is one way our organization is seeking to meet a critical need in our neighborhood. We are convinced that our service to the community has far reaching effects and will positively influence the lives of hundreds if not thousands of young people within the city of Plainfield. We believe that we are capable of fulfilling this social mandate without imposing our religious convictions on those we serve in our community. We believe that our works and acts of social restoration speak loudly into the hearts of hurting people around us.
History:
The Plainfield Church of God, now New Covenant Church of God was established about 30 years ago. The church began with humble beginnings formed by immigrants to the United States. They rented houses of worship to conduct their services because they did not have a building of their own. As time went by the congregation was able to acquire a building of their own. Today the New Covenant Church of God own, their house of worship at 225 East 7th Street, Plainfield, New Jersey. The building is 16,000 square feet and has sanctuary, fellowship hall, nursery, and five class rooms, basement, offices, and up-stairs lounge area. The building space is multi-purpose. With this provision the present pastor and his wife has cast a vision of reaching the community, not only from a spiritual stand point but from a social perspective as well. From a closed local church we have evolved into a church that is thrusting itself into the community to meet the social, educational, physical and other needs of the community. The vision of this twenty-first century church is to impact every facet of the lives of people within our reach. Our church is now actively engaged in the community. The Ladies Ministries Department conducts a monthly breakfast program at the YMCA and serves 36-40 individuals and families. We are also engaged in clothes distribution to those who are in need. One of our most significant community outreach programs is the WIC Farmers’ Market Program that is conducted by our church in conjunction with the local WIC office and the State Department of Health and Senior Services. This program brings farmers into the community, within close proximity to WIC clients so that they can redeem their WIC checks for fresh fruits and vegetables. Food demonstrations and nutritional classes are conducted. Thousands of low income mothers have benefited from this program. Last year we conducted our first health fair. This was a success; this year, in an attempt to collaborate with other agencies in the city, a joint health fair will be held. We will be providing a farmer, with fresh fruits and vegetables for clients. On November 11 we will be conducting a special seminar session: “Healthy Mother Healthy Baby” at our church in conjunction with the Plainfield Outreach Group for young mothers within the community. This Thanksgiving we will conduct our first coat give away for those in the community who are in need of warm coats for the winter. In a continuum to expand our reach and meet the needs of the community, we explored yet another avenue as we produced our first youth public speaking contest. It is our desire to make this an annual contest and extend it to other organizations within the community.
