The Mission of the Arc of Somerset County is to provide advocacy and services for persons with developmental disabilities and their families. In pursuit of this mission, The Arc will dedicate itself to promoting the principles of individual informed choice, community inclusion, and the prevention of disabilities.

Description:
The Arc of Somerset County has helped thousands of individuals with developmental disabilities to reach for their dreams, achieve their own measure of success, live independently among the community, and if possible become gainfully employed. The legacy of this work began over thirty-five years ago when parents met in living rooms to try to find ways to help each other. That informal group became The Arc, and Somerset County is one of many in a national network of people helping people.
The Arc of Somerset County programs include the Jerry Davis Early Childhood Center, the Early Intervention Program, Camp Jotoni, the PACT program (parents and children together), four employment services centers, and twenty-six residential locations throughout Somerset County. The Arc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is a Somerset County United Way-affiliated agency.

History:
The Arc was founded in Bergen County, NJ in 1950. It was a grassroots parents movement and was originally known as the Association of Retarded Children. It then became Association of Retarded Citizen. In 1992, the corporate name became The Arc of the United States, private non-profit 501(c)(3)organization. The Arc provides advocacy, educational, residential and employment programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD).
The Arc of Somerset County was founded in 1972 with 16 individuals with developmental disabilities and 2 employees. We now serve over 1,000 individuals with DD and are the fourth (4th) largest chapter in NJ with 350 employees.
