The YM-YWHA of Union County has been serving the Eastern end of Union County for well over 125 years.Especially catering to the needs of the lower income and immigrant population, the "Y" offers programs in many areas: Early Childhood, Senior Adults, Youth and Camp, Health, Aquatics, Recreation and Cultural Arts. The mission of the agency to is enrich the life of the Jewish and the general community by developing and implementing programs for the social service, educational, cultural recreational and physical needs of the community while promoting Jewish values and the principals of responsibility and democracy.
Description:
All generations from infants through teen years, young families to mature families and our senior adults are provided for at the "Y". For many, the "Y" serves as a primary social service institution meeting the basic human needs such as childcare, a hot kosher meal, relief from social isolation,transportation, an understanding ear, supportive hand and an open heart all in one agency. There are five departments under one central administration. They include Early Childhood serving over 160 children from all different backgrounds races and religions, Youth serving 50 children daily in our after school program, Vacation Program, Family Programming and Classes and Summer Camp serving 450 children, Health and Recreation providing a full service gymnasium, fitness center swimming pool and numerous classes and activities and the Adult and Senior Adult Department providing for social, cultural education health and nutrition needs of that population. The "Y" serves over 11,000 meals annually to older adults as well as providing transportation to and from the "Y" for those unable to provide their own transportation.
History:
The YM-YWHA has served Union County for over 125 years and has been at this present location for about 40 years. Prior to that the "Y" was located in Elizabeth. The "Y" is a non profit organization that has continued to offer services and programs to low income families in the Eastern End of Union County and surrounding areas.
