The New Jersey Metro Chapter provides over 100 programs and services to more than 10,000 people with MS, their families and caregivers. The Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported solely by voluntary contributions. It funds more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, and provides more professional education programs than any other MS organization in the world.
Description:
The New Jersey Metro Chapter serves Northern New Jersey in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. It also services Central New Jersey in Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties. For more than 50 years, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has provided help and hope for Americans with MS… Hope through our extensive and promising national and international research programs, and help through client programs. The Society serves local communities through its 50-state network of chapters, of which the Greater North Jersey Chapter is a part. These chapters provide assistance to more than one million people annually and encourage personal empowerment for those with the disease through employment counseling, family programs, volunteer opportunities and advocacy issues. Programs include: crisis and short-term home health care; nineteen self-help groups led by trained volunteer facilitators; therapeutic swim, yoga, tai chi and exercise classes; physical and occupational therapy; advocacy; financial assistance for people in need of emergency medical/pharmaceutical assistance or medical equipment; educational seminars and conferences; information and referral; recreational activities for people with MS, their caregivers, and children; and lots more.
History:
Since its founding in 1946, over $420 million has been invested in research to find the cause, treatments, and cure for MS. The Society is the only national voluntary MS organization that meets the standards of all major agencies that rate the fiscal responsibility of non-profit groups.
