The mission of the Urban League is to primarily assist African Americans and other minority group members in the achievement of economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
Description:
As direct service providers we employ the tools and methods of social work and we intervene at all points in the social and economic structure where the interests of our constituents are at stake. We supply information on the minority population, conduct surveys, training programs, secure jobs, motivate youth, and provide essential services in education, housing, health and welfare.
The Urban League of Union County, Inc., operates three program sites, employs ten- (10) full time and four (4) part time individuals.
Current programs in operation include the following:
Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Assistance Program provides information to discourage teenagers from early sexual involvement and/or parenthood. We conduct seminars, workshops, debates and one to one counseling which covers such areas as abstinence, male and female sexual anatomy, contraception and birth (pre and post natal), STD’s, personal responsibility, human growth and development and family life relationships.
Alternative to Incarceration is a four-month program for juvenile offenders. We attempt to develop a sense of self worth and improve self-esteem in participants. On a daily basis we provide educational training, vocational instruction and group counseling services to youth referred by the Family Court.
Economic Development and Employment department provides job search and job readiness skills to individuals in a classroom setting through the Work First New Jersey training program. Computer training is provided through the Union County College Community Technology Center (CTC). This department also sponsors the Summer Youth Employment Training Program for eligible Union County youth.
Housing and Community Development services are designed to assist families or individuals in maintaining shelter and a stable environment. Services include mortgage default and delinquency counseling, rental assistance counseling, consumer credit and budget management, energy assistance, emergency assistance for rent/mortgage, utilities, food, pre-purchase counseling, reverse mortgage counseling.. Some services have eligibility criteria and documentation of need is required. The department also provides financial literacy seminars.
History:
The Urban League of Union County Inc., founded in 1944, is a non-profit community based organization in Elizabeth, New Jersey. We are one of 105 affiliates of the ninety-seven year-old National Urban League located in New York City.
Throughout our history we have developed programs that meet the needs of our constituents. Our program thrust in 1944 was primarily in employment and has expanded over the years to other areas. We serve more than 2,000 individuals annually. Our track record is solid and we are the oldest biracial agency exclusively concerned with inner-city problems.
