Hillside Adult Literacy Program

Our mission is to help adults help themselves. We offer free, quality tutoring in English as a Second Language, working toward student-set goals by providing tools and resources to support both the student and volunteer tutor in a learning environment.

Description:
Our adult students are taught by volunteer tutors. These volunteers are trained in a 2 hour program, then matched with a student or students at a time and level of their choice. The majority of our tutors have no teaching experience, and speak only English. We provide all the materials required. Not only do the students benefit from their classes, but the tutors find the experience deeply gratifying.

History:
This program has provided more than 5500 hours of tutoring since 2001. Our students have been able to get and retain jobs, help their children in school and generally be an active participant in American society.
