Interfaith Hospitality Network Of Somerset County
IHN/SC provides shelter, meals, and assistance to homeless families. Our vision is empowering homeless families to attain independence. Our mission is to: Create safe havens for homeless families; Partner with homeless families to plan their transitions to independence; Connect homeless families to necessary resources; Personalize a continuum of services for homeless families; and Facilitate mutually enriching relationships for our families.
Description:
Emergency Shelter Component: Client families receive shelter, meals, transportation, basic needs, case management advocacy and referral. With staff, each client family develops a structured case plan with specific individualized goals that will lead them to self-sufficiency. Services are provided by a small professional staff and a large volunteer network. Families are sheltered at interdenominational congregations throughout the County and have access to the Flynn Day Center in Somerville which is open 7 days per week. Sunrise House: This is the transitional living component of IHN/SC. Two families who have prepared themselves for independence in our emergency shelter but are stalled by their search for permanent affordable housing reside here. The families continue their case management with professional staff while focusing on their housing search, financial management and daily living skills. Phase 2 Transitional Support: IHN/SC offers 18 months of continuing case management and support to clients once they have reached permanent housing. We believe that these additional services will help clients maintain independence and prevent a recurrence of homelessness.
History:
IHN/SC was created in 1992 by volunteers from local religious congregations in response to the growing number of homeless families in Somerset County. In 2003, IHN/SC opened the doors to a transitional living and support program as a response to the lack of affordable housing in Somerset and surrounding counties. The facility is Sunrise House and the support program is Life Skills Training-Phase 2.
