Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County
To promote literacy in Somerset County through student-centered tutoring for adults.
Description:
LVSC provides free, one-to-one, and small group tutoring to functionally illiterate adults through a network of volunteers trained in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). LVSC recruits and trains volunteer tutors who are matched with adult students. More than 20% of adults in Somerset County perform at the lowest levels of literacy. Tutoring is structured towards the students’ goals, such as reading a memo, filling out a job application, helping a child with his/her homework, or be understood by a co-worker. Our group is the sole means for many adults to become literate since limitations such as time, finances and transportation, preclude them from participating in traditional classroom style instruction. Demand for service grows continuously, as evidenced by our waiting list of 100+ students, causing us to seek new sources of funding to support program growth.

Overall Experience

The opportunity to change the world.

Training is intense, but fun. Tutoring is a little scary at first, but after the first session I became very comfortable. Before I began my work with LVSC, I sometimes went to bed at night wondering if I was truly capable of making a real difference in the world... now I don't have that problem. You will have the opportunity to work with remarkable trainers, learn with other members of the community who are just like you and most importantly to give a lifetime gift to an amazing, spectacular and grateful person. Everyone I talk to about LVSC says, "Oh, I've always wanted to do that..." and I say, "Yep, so did I... that's why I did it!" Which will you say?? posted on June 18, 2007 |
