Hope For Veterans Program
Creating a brighter future for individuals recovering from mental illness and substance abuse by providing housing and services in a dignified, respectful, and person-centered way.
Description:
Veterans constitute a disproportionate share of our country's homeless population. It is estimated that in New Jersey as many as 6,500 former servicemen and women will sleep on the street or in shelters on any given night. Hope for Veterans is a transitional housing program developed by Community Hope for veterans having honorably served our country in time of need who have since fallen upon hard times. Hope for Veterans sees to break the cycle of homelessness by helping veterans establish independence and live with the dignity they deserve.
History:
Community Hope has been helping individuals recover from mental illness and substance abuse in specialized residential programs since 1986. In 2004, we directed our experience in residential services to address the needs of homeless veterans. Contributing to the high rate of homelessness among veterans in our area are issues such as substance abuse, depression and post-traumatic stress.. all further compounded by a lack of affordable housing. The Hope for Veterans Program opened as a 75 bed transitional housing facility serving honorably-discharged homeless veterans. In 2007, Community Hope opened a new wing, expanding the program to 95 beds in order to meet the need for shelter and services.
