The best kept secret in Charlotte County is the Good Friends Program sponsored by the Charlotte/Glades Library System. The program tutors and mentors children in the 2-3rd grades who need a little extra help with their reading skills. The Good Friends concept is an easy one. Adult volunteers are paired with children referred to the program by their classroom teachers. For one hour each week, volunteers give the gifts of their knowledge, their time and their encouragement and provide each child a much needed, positive, adult role model. The benefits are plentiful. Children are rewarded with special attention and assistance with reading. Volunteers leave each week knowing that they have made a difference in the life and educational achievement of a special student. Tutors are needed at two locations. Sallie Jones Elementary School in Punta Gorda M-F 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. working with second graders or at Mid-County library Tuesdays – Saturdays during library hours working with 2nd or 3rd graders.
Volunteers must fill out an application, submit to a criminal background check, sign an affidavit of good moral character that has to be notarized and attend our training/orientation program before being matched with a student. This opportunity is sponsored by: Charlotte RSVP
