We are looking for those that want to make a difference in the life of a child! Here are the volunteer opportunities available: School-based programs: We are located in every school in Englewood; elementary, middle and high. The school based program is where mentors meet with students for one hour per week during the school day at a time that is convenient for both mentor and student. The school based program focuses on helping students improve academically. Mentors may read with their student or help them with any of their academic needs. Although the mentor helps them academically, they are not seen as tutors. Most importantly, the mentor is there to be a friend. Half of the time is spent in academics, and the other half mentors and students may play a board game or just talk. Again, students are not required to be in the program. They are referred by school staff, and they are students that need help academically or socially. Community-based programs: This is our “traditional” program where mentors meet with children in the community to do fun activities on the weekend or in the evening for an hour per week. The activities could include going to a park, riding bikes together, fishing, going to the beach, etc… Children in this program typically come from single parent homes, or they may be raised by their grandparents or come from a home with an incarcerated parent. Parents/grandparents/school staff refer students for this program, and they are not required to be in the program.
Training is not required in order to volunteer, however volunteers must be able to pass a background/fingerprint check. We also check three references. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be a resident of the area for at least 6 months, have access to an automobile, not be involved in any drug activity (nor may any household member) and be able to commit to meeting with a child for an hour per week for the minimum of one school year.
