Begun in 1965, today the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer In Service to
America) program has nearly 6000 members serving non-profit organizations throughout the nation to improve local communities. A VISTA can be of any age 18 or older – a college student to a retiree – but must be a
U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
In return for a year of service,
VISTA members receive a monthly living stipend along with health coverage, training, travel and relocation expenses, child care if income-eligible, and more. Current receipt of Social Security or other federal payment is not affected in any way. Upon completion of service, members also receive either an award of $4,725 to help pay for education, or a $1,200 additional stipend.
To help communities in the
Sunshine
State, VolunteerFlorida, the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service, obtained funding to place
VISTA members in 11 volunteer centers. VolunteerWay of Charlotte County was chosen as a recipient. If you would like to gain career experience while earning tuition funds, have a lifetime’s wisdom to share, or believe in the value of volunteers to our community, don’t let this wonderful opportunity slip by.
Working closely with our Director, VISTA will multi-task to help grow this volunteer initiative by cultivating relationships in the community; designing, planning, organizing, and implementing programs for young adults and businesses; develop and maintain databases; conduct surveys; organize and schedule volunteer management trainings; and more.
